I’m pretty sure I was de-throned this weekend as the hostess with the mostess. Fret not, there’s plenty of room on the roster for Marthas-in-training.
Sunday afternoon, I attended a theme party so worthy of accolades that I’m handing over my party queen scepter and am devoting today’s post to my friend Rebecca Van Nederynen’s hula hoop-making party (the five-year-old in you grew bright eyed when you read that!).
The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and it was the perfect day to camp out on the lawn with plumbing tubing and electrical tape to whip up some childhood memories. I’m sure you’re saying to yourself, “I want a homemade hoop too!”, so I’ve posted the instructions for how to make a hula hoop in the “Recipe” section of my blog.
Worker bees need gourmet grub and Rebecca prepared a spread fit for the queen bee herself. This talented home chef once spent a chunk of time drinking pints in London pubs, so went back to her British roots, rolled up her sleeves and turned out cucumber tea sandwiches worthy of Buckingham Palace.
She quenched our thirst with a delicious Pimm’s concoction and vibrant jugs of pink and yellow spiked lemonade. Her delicate dishes sung of spring and her dainty glasses invited us to indulge in fruit soaked with the juice from her potent potions.
The sweetness of the refreshing drinks was offset by morsels of home-ground savory chicken pancetta meatballs. How many of you can say that you’ve ground your own chicken for meatballs?
While the rest of the guests were downstairs rocking their hoops, I was stationed by the kitchen table, indulging in these delightful springtime snacks. Mmm! When the sun began to fade and the Pimms haze was setting in, our haute host brought out a bevvy of sweet treats. You can be sure I had my share of mini cupcakes, and with each bite, I sunk just a little bit deeper into the blissful delight of this positively perfect garden party.
Humble hosts tend to travel in packs, and Miss Rebecca’s crew is no exception to the rule. She’s even a member of an elite baking group with pastry chefs from some of the best spots here in town (do you sense the envy in my pen?). Also a member is the culinary artist behind one of the highlights of the party… homemade French macaroons! If your mouth is watering at the thought of this hard-to-find dessert, you’re in luck- Shira’s macaroons are just a few clicks away.
